LEGALIZATION OF SPORTS BETTING HAS POSITIVE IMPACT ON LOCAL RACEWAY
BUSINESS
Hollywood Gaming spoke out about how the legalization of sports betting has impacted their business. Sportsbook manager, Dave Schleter, said they have seen an increase in customers, especially in those solely interested in sports betting, and the response has been positive. “Sports betting was legal in the state of Indiana prior to this so they were getting a lot of folks going over there from this market," said Schleter. Since sports betting is now legal in Ohio, he believes it will help keep business, and revenue, local. Original story here.
HOW TO PLAN YOUR WAY AROUND DAYTON WINTER RESTAURANT WEEK
FOOD & DRINK
Thirty-three locally owned restaurants have signed up for Winter Restaurant Week, where you can sample some of the area's best dishes at bargain prices from Jan. 22-29. “When it comes to maximizing your restaurant week experience, getting a handle on the various menus and making a plan in advance is critical,” advises Dayton Daily News’ contributing writer, Alexis Larsen, adding that, “reservations are almost always a must and there are only so many days you can make it count, so difficult decisions will have to be made.” Check out the full list of participating restaurants and more of Larsen’s tips here.
THE STATE OF THE DAYTON HOUSING MARKET
REAL ESTATE
As mortgage rates rise, local real estate experts say that the Dayton region has low inventory, but the demand for homes is staying constant. The public interest in purchasing houses has led to prices of homes continually increasing. According to Dayton Realtors President Greg Blatt, “right now, we’re running about 20 percent of the market inventory. Demand is staying about the same. That means home prices are increasing, as we go forth.” Full story here.

state ban on invasive tree goes into effect
ENVIRONMENT

Callery pear trees have been banned in the state of Ohio. The buckeye state is the first in the nation to take measures to stop the invasive species from spreading. In 2018, the state of Ohio told the public that a five year notice of a ban was being given, preparing Ohioans for the outlaw of the plant for 2023. According to University of Cincinnati Biologist Theresa Cullery, “Seedlings of pear trees are now also showing up in the forest understory. They are very difficult to remove because they have a very long taproot.” See the original story here.
