local army vet competes on 'master distiller' with plans to open distillery​

Springfield resident Matt Brown recently competed on Season 4 of Discovery’s “Moonshiners: Master Distiller” and went head-to-head with fellow combat veterans. Brown, an Urbana native and U.S. Army veteran, was featured in the Jan. 25 episode titled “Armed Forces Face Off.” Although he didn’t take home the title of “Master Distiller,” Brown has teamed up with another Springfield resident, Shawn Rigsby - who appeared on the show and won in 2021 - along with Urbana resident Jon Umstead to open a distillery called Champagne Shine Company. He said they are currently looking for a location and hope to have it up and running this year. Full story here.

Nelly, the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning rap superstar, will perform Thursday, July 20 at 8 p.m. at Kettering’s Fraze Pavilion, located at 695 Lincoln Park Blvd. in Kettering. He will be joined by special guest Chase McDaniel, a country music singer-songwriter. Original story and ticket information here.

$40M downtown dayton redevelopment project moves forward

Construction has started on five floors of Grant-Deneau Tower located at 40 W. Fourth Street in downtown Dayton. Floors three to five will be for office use while floors six to 22 will be residential units. There will be 160 one- and two-bedroom units. Original plans for the redevelopment included a restaurant on the top floor, which the developer stated “may be a possibility” however there will be at least two penthouse units. The 225,000-square-foot building is Dayton’s first modern-day skyscraper. Construction work is slated to be completed in November. More here.

Executive Chef Becky Clark of Little Fish Brewing Co. is among the James Beard Foundation’s 2023 Restaurant and Chef Awards Semifinalists for the Greater Lakes Region, announced Jan. 25. The region includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. She explained it’s an honor to have her work recognized in this way because the James Beard Awards, often referred to as the “Oscars of Food,” celebrate the best chefs, restaurants and food professionals in the United States. The Neon in downtown Dayton is hosting a 25th anniversary screening of the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan romantic comedy “You’ve Got Mail” on Tuesday, Feb. 14. A cocktail hour will begin at 6 p.m. The film will begin at 7 p.m. Cost is $25, which includes a movie ticket, adult beverage (wine, beer or house cocktail), a small popcorn and a dessert. Dessert will be provided by Megan Smith, Neon board member and former proprietor of St. Anne the Tart. The cocktail and desserts will be a nod to NYC’s Café Lalo, an iconic landmark restaurant made popular by the movie. Learn more here.

Construction on “what will likely be a major draw to a Dayton-area community” is in progress. Plans for the YS Live comedy club project were approved two years ago and work began last month. The performance hall will have table seating and booths for live shows. The club also will have a foyer, merchandise shop, green room, bar, box office and restrooms, as well as an upper-level mezzanine that will be used as a control room.
