DOROTHY LANE CAKE DECORATORS WIN PILLSBURY'S INTERNATIONAL CAKE DECORATING COMPETITION

Lee Ann Parsons and Kaytlyn Stanuszek, Love Cakes by Dorothy Lane Market designers, competed in Pillsbury’s Creative Cake Decorating Competition against cake designers from Canada, Mexico and other parts of the United States. The pair came in first place in the wedding cake and buttercream categories. They also took home the 21st Pillsbury Bakers’ Plus Grand Champion Trophy for their cumulative points in the competition. More and more Americans are taking the leap and choosing to become business owners, particularly among baby boomers and Gen-Xers. Ohioans set a record number of business filings in 2019, 2020, and 2021. There were 171,073 new business filings in 2020, up from 130,621 in 2019. Ohio smashed its record again in 2021 at 197,010, a 15% increase, according to the Ohio Secretary of State’s office. More here.
LOCAL ORGANIZATION GRANTED $800K TO PROMOTE BLACK YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH
HEALTH & WELLNESS

Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services will receive a $400,000, three-year renewable grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health. An additional $400,000 will launch Adverse Childhood Experiences Aware — an innovative approach designed to improve youth mental health. The organization is one of eight across the country selected for the initiative, and the only Ohio organization participating in the initiative. Full story here.
WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY TO OFFER FLIGHT COURSES TO COUNTER PILOT SHORTAGE
EDUCATION

Wright State University forged a new partnership with Dayton-based First Flight Aviation, a flight school located at the Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport. The partnership is one way Wright State is working to give students the education and skills needed to pursue in-demand careers. The university hopes the program will help relieve some of the pilot shortage, currently projected by the Federal Aviation Administration to be a persistent issue over the next several years. LOCAL RESIDENT COMPETES ON NEW SEASON OF ‘HELL’S KITCHEN’

An executive chef from Carlisle living in West Chester, Mindy Shea, is competing on Season 21 of Hell’s Kitchen: Battle of the Ages. Shea spent 15 years working in the healthcare industry despite her love of cooking. It wasn’t until the coronavirus pandemic that she chose her passion over her career and decided to try out for Gordon Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen.
